Brooklyn Bridge Park will soon be getting a makeover, but some neighbors say it is not a good plan and are asking the mayor to change his mind.
The city plans on building two new apartment buildings to generate money to maintain the waterfront area. The city and state approved the plan nearly a decade ago.
Residents in the area say they don't want this type of construction because the buildings would cast a shadow, taking away the aesthetics of the park and blocking the waterfront view. They also say the development would create a lot of traffic and congestion, which could put people's safety at risk.
A spokesperson from the mayor's office says the mayor has been a long-standing supporter of the park, and he sees the model as critical to the park's long-term financial stability.
The deadline for developers to make a bid on the buildings is in late July. Residents say they are not giving up and will continue to fight to save the park.
