Plans to reopen a Brooklyn jail may bring more than inmates to the area.
According to the New York Times, the city?s Department of Corrections is planning to reopen the Brooklyn House of Detention. Department officials say they plan to convert part of the building into retail space. Officials add reopening the jail will also disperse inmates at Rikers Island.
The Brooklyn jail closed in June 2003. It is set to reopen in approximately a year. However, the redevelopment plan would take about three years to complete. The borough president has asked students at Pratt Institute to draw several designs for the new jail and retail space.
