Police say an 8-year-old girl was found dead Tuesday morning at an East New York home.

According to the NYPD, the girl was found on the kitchen floor of her home at 604 Hegeman Avenue. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the mother claims she last saw her daughter going to the bathroom at 8 a.m. Officials say that the death is suspicious and being investigated as so, and that the city's Administration for Child Services has been notified. They provided a statement that said in part:

“Our top priority is protecting the safety and wellbeing of all children in New York City. We are investigating this case."
