A suspect in the shooting of a state trooper in Massachusetts was killed during a shootout with U.S. marshals at an apartment building in the Bronx early Friday. The incident also left two U.S. marshals wounded.
The suspect, 35-year-old Andre Sterling, was accused of shooting a state trooper in the hand on Nov. 20 during a traffic stop in Hyannis, Massachusetts, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the incident publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.
Massachusetts State Police tracked down Sterling in the Bronx and obtained arrest warrants last week.
The two U.S. marshals suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the 5:30 a.m. confrontation on Ely Avenue in Wakefield. One was shot in the arm while the other was shot in both his arm and leg. They are recovering at New York City Health and Hospitals Jacobi and are expected to stay overnight.
The altercation was so loud that it woke up neighbors.
A detective with the NYPD, who has more than 20 years with the department, was also injured while trying to bring the two officers to safety, according to the Detective Endowment Association.
Calls were made the U.S. Marshals Service seeking comment.
