Police said Saturday the Flatbush day care center where a police officer opened fire Friday was being used to store drugs.
Authorities say they discovered 10 pounds of marijuana and more than $100,000 in cash in the basement of the Special Moments Daycare on East 52nd St. Police say they were called to the scene after receiving reports that an intruder had entered the center.
According to police, an officer spotted Gavin Nugent, 34, in a back room. Nugent pointed a gun at officers, who fired three rounds at him and followed him when he ran to the basement, police said. Nugent was hit in the torso and left wrist and remains in stable condition at Kings County Hospital.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says Special Moments owner Donna Rogers, 37, and her husband, Sherwin Rogers, 36, were arrested Saturday on marijuana-possession charges. Authorities also arrested Nugent and the other man, both who allegedly broke into the day care center, and a third man who is accused of functioning as a lookout on charges including robbery and burglary. Police say no children were injured during the incident.
