The NYPD says a carjacking suspect was fatally shot in Cypress Hills by an off-duty police officer after opening fire this morning. According to police, the off-duty lieutenant noticed a car strike a divider and pole at Cypress Hills Street and Jamaica Avenue at around 4:15 a.m. Police say the driver, 22-year-old Christopher Kissane, of Queens, got out of the car and fled on foot, with the officer following him in his personal vehicle. While fleeing, Kissane allegedly shot at the officer, who returned fire, striking the 22-year-old. The suspect was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital. Police say they found Kissane's weapon at the scene and also a bag with 15 bullets inside. Investigators say Kissane had carjacked someone at gunpoint in Queens 15 minutes prior to the shooting and was also suspected in an attempted robbery and an additional unsuccessful car theft. The incident happened in the same precinct where Detective Peter Figoski was fatally shot while responding to a home burglary in December of 2011.
