NYPD officers held a fundraiser to help pay medical bills for a former colleague who was forced into retirement by a rare liver disease before his 40th birthday.
Yan Kochergin became ill seven years ago and was diagnosed with Wilson's disease. He continued working as a police officer for five more years, but was forced to retire two years ago.
Kochergin has a wife, son and another child on the way.
Police officers and others have raised around $15,000 to help with Kochergin's medical expenses.
The family says they are looking for a liver donor who has a similar physical makeup to Kochergin: a male or female about 6 feet tall, 170 pounds and blood type O, between 18 and 60 years of age.
