Police search for accused murderer accidentally released from Rikers Island

Police say Buggs was behind bars for fatally shooting a 55-year-old man in front of a bodega in Bed-Stuy in 2018.

Police are searching for a man who was released from Rikers Island due to a clerical error Wednesday. 
According to the Department of Correction, 26-year-old Christopher Buggs was “prematurely released” from the jail complex, and now police want him back in custody.
Police say Buggs was behind bars for fatally shooting a 55-year-old man in front of a bodega in Bed-Stuy in 2018.
Buggs was being held at Rikers Island for second-degree murder and criminal possession charges while awaiting trial.
The NYPD says he has 31 prior arrests.
He is described as approximately 5’5’’ and around 160 pounds.
The Department of Correction released a statement, saying in part: “We are aware of this incident and a full investigation into how this happened is underway. Right now, we are working with our law enforcement partners to return this individual to custody.”
