Supporters held a prayer vigil for Kings County District Attorney Kenneth Thompson outside his office Wednesday, a day after he announced that he is battling cancer.
Members of the National Action Network, religious leaders and the DA's fellow elected officials joined the vigil.
They stood side by side and held hands, praying for Thompson's recovery.
Thompson is the first black DA to represent the borough. He is perhaps best known for his commitment to freeing people who have been wrongfully convicted and imprisoned.
"Cancer cannot come against us, and cancer will not win," said the city's public advocate, Letitia James. "You'll be back to us. We know that."
Chief Assistant DA Eric Gonzalez will lead the office while Thompson undergoes treatments.
