Proposed waterfront revitalization divides Port Washington community

A proposal to redevelop Inspiration Wharf in Port Washington is generating mixed reactions among residents.

The project, proposed by the Sbarro family, best known for the national pizza chain, would transform the aging wharf into a development featuring 38 condominium units, retail shops and a restaurant. The popular Douglas & James Ice Cream shop would remain at the site as part of the redevelopment.

Many residents agree the wharf is in need of improvements. One visitor described the area as beautiful but said it has room for enhancement.

"It could be gorgeous," said Sandra, a Port Washington visitor. "Much prettier than now."

However, not everyone supports the proposal. Some community members worry the size of the planned building would obstruct views of Manhasset Bay from the nearby Town of North Hempstead dock and its public promenade.

"We're talking about something that would extend out as far as you can see on that wharf," said Port Washington resident Doug Wood. "It's a tremendous building."

Others have raised concerns that the redevelopment could limit public access to the waterfront.

Developer Gianni Sbarro said those concerns are unfounded, telling News 12 that the project includes a public boardwalk and a small park designed to preserve public access and allow residents and visitors to continue enjoying views of the bay.

The proposal requires a special-use permit from the Town of North Hempstead. A public hearing on the project is scheduled for Tuesday night.

Town officials have declined to comment on the proposal until the public hearing process is complete.
