Protesters and politicians came together Wednesday to call for an end to the NYPD's controversial stop-and-frisk policy.
Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn) has introduced legislation that would require police officers to ask permission before stopping people. The current policy allows cops to randomly stop anyone without warning or consent.
According to Communities for Police Reform, the NYPD conducted more than 684,000 stops in 2011, a 14-percent increase over 2010. The group says that 85 percent of those stops targeted Hispanics or African-Americans.
