A call for action outside of Yankee Stadium took place on Tuesday, with protesters calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to include health care for all in the state’s 2024 fiscal budget.
Protesters made it clear Tuesday that they believe Hochul made a mistake in the new budget term by allotting only 7.5% of the 2024 budget to Medicaid.
Health care workers at the rally say that they want at least a 10% of funding to go to Medicaid to provide the appropriate pay for workers providing services in hospitals to match the increasing need of medical help in New York City.
Nurses from Montefiore Medical Center at the rally told News 12 that the waiting rooms have turned into “overflow rooms” due to the hospital being understaffed – which they say is because of nurses being underpaid.
“Doctors, we can’t even attract decent doctors anymore in our major hospitals,” said Maurice DePaulo, pharmacist at Montefiore Medical Center. “The reason why is because the funding is not enough to keep up with the rates in cities elsewhere.”
News 12 has reached out for a statement from the governor’s office and is awaiting a response, but protestors told News 12 that they will continue to rally outside of Yankee Stadium every day there is a game until Gov. Hochul makes a revision to her 2024 state budget on Medicaid for New Yorkers.
