Public Advocate Letitia James slammed landlords known for multiple housing violations at a rally outside the housing court in Downtown Brooklyn Monday.
Organizers say the rally is part of a campaign by James to raise awareness of tenants' rights.
James presented a list of landlords who she says have the poorest performance records, and many operating Brooklyn buildings appeared on the list.
To make the list, landlords must operate buildings with multiple housing maintenance code violations, which can include lack of heat or hot water, vermin infestations and inadequate fire exits, among other problems.
According to James, 3,385 Brooklyn buildings had open housing violations, almost three times as many as found in Manhattan.
After releasing this year's list, James spent Monday visiting tenants throughout the city, making a stop at housing court to speak with tenants facing eviction.
"Tenants really should know that they do not have to leave their apartment unless there's a warrant, a legal document basically saying that they have to be evicted," she says.
James says tenants should be aware that they have rights as renters, and that they can report housing problems to 311.
