Brooklyn commuters heading into Manhattan are finally able to enjoy a ride on the R train once again.
During Superstorm Sandy, an estimated 27 million gallons of water poured into the Montague tunnel, which takes the train under the East River. It was closed for months while crews worked to repair the damage.
In the past year, crews replaced 11,000 feet of track, 30,000 feet of concrete and terra cotta duct banks, 75,000 feet of power cable and 200,000 feet of communications cable.
Crews also added some new designs such as moving the signal relay room to a higher floor, and installing new pumping equipment to limit the impact of any future storms.
Officials say the repairs were finished ahead of schedule and under budget. It was budgeted as a $250 million project, but finished $60 million under budget and a month ahead of schedule.
