A rally in Bedford-Stuyvesant marked 10 years since Chanel Petro-Nixon, a high school honor roll student, was found strangled in a garbage bag four days after disappearing on Father's Day.
The 16-year-old girl had told family members she was going to fill out a job application for an Applebee's restaurant on Fulton Street. She also told her family that she would see her friend -- who prosecutors say is the man now indicted for her slaying.
A grand jury indicted 29-year-old Veron Primus after NYPD detectives, who learned he was in custody overseas, went to speak with him. News 12 sources say a witness came to New York to testify before a grand jury earlier this month.
As News 12 Brooklyn has reported, Primus was deported to the Caribbean island of St. Vincent last year after serving a prison sentence in New York for violating an order of protection. An ex-girlfriend had accused him of trying to take her hostage.
He is now imprisoned on St. Vincent, accused of fatally stabbing another woman in November 2015.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office tells News 12 that they have already started talks with the Department of Justice to extradite Primus. Once he's back in the United States, he could face up to 25 years to life in prison.
Officials and family members are calling on any witnesses to come forward.
"We need as much evidence as possible to make sure that we convict this man for taking her life," says Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.
Chanel's mother, Lucita, says she can finally feel some hope after years of frustration.
"It's a step closer to getting justice for my daughter," she says.
