Red Cross officials are helping several Brooklyn residents left homeless after an afternoon house fire at 172 Vernon Ave. Firefighters responded to the 911 call at around 1 p.m. Two people living on the third floor say they were able to escape before help arrived. One of them, a female, was taken to Woodhull Medical Center with minor injuries. Homeowner Ninette Borovicka says she is in the middle of an investigation to prove she is the rightful owner of the home. Borovicka says she lost important documentation in the fire. Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries.
