Iris Soto Mayor turned 81 on Monday.
She told News 12 she has lived in her NYCHA unit for more than four decades.
Despite keeping her apartment spotless, she says she has caught dozens of roaches and other insects on sticky traps and has even sealed her washer and dryer to keep bugs from crawling inside.
Another problem is a large hole in her ceiling that she says has been there for more than three months.
“When there is a leak, I call them, but no one ever comes to fix it. Or they come, look at it, and never come back,” Soto Mayor said.
She also pointed to a garbage chute on her floor that she says had been sealed for four months but was suddenly open on the day News 12 visited.
NYCHA said the trash chutes were reopened Monday after an earlier issue, but on the second floor the chute was still taped shut.
She says she’s been hauling her garbage down five flights and across the courtyard to overflowing outdoor bins.
“Around 7 p.m., you can’t even throw out trash because it’s full of rats, they’re like the size of cats,” she said.
NYCHA said exterminators will continue trying to schedule another visit, though Soto Mayor says she’s home all day and will be waiting whenever they arrive.
