An excessive heat warning starts Thursday for all five boroughs, and News 12 is reminding New Yorkers about how to prevent tragedy when dealing with your cars.  

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says around 40 children die each year from heatstroke due to being left or trapped in the car. Even if you’re just making a quick pit stop at the store, it’s important to take your child with you.  

A car’s temperature can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, according to AAA. Even if an errand is quick, just a few minutes can heat the inside of a car up to an unsafe temperature.  

AAA says to not leave your child, elderly loved one or pet unattended in the car during hot days – even if your windows are tinted or rolled down.
