Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez walked the premises of
the Hunts Point Terminal Market as part of an event to discuss the
future of the facility.
Hunts Point is now part of Ocasio-Cortez’s district due
to redistricting. Union leaders at the market say she was instrumental not
only in helping workers get a raise last year, but also securing grant funding
for the market’s revitalization.
The congresswoman says she learned the importance of
modernizing the infrastructure, limiting air pollution, and ensuring everyone
is taken care of, from the farmers supplying food, to the consumers.
Officials say the facility employs around 2,000
people now, but with advancements they hope to quadruple that number in the coming
decade.
