Many of New York City's homeless are living a daily nightmare, according to a new report released by the City Comptroller.
The report claims the Department of Homeless Services is placing families in unsafe shelters.
Comptroller Scott Stringer's inspectors checked out more than 100 randomly selected shelter units across the city during the past year. The group says it found 87 percent had conditions that threatened residents' health or safety.
On the list is Flatlands Family Residence in Canarsie. Brooklyn residents say they are not surprised.
The Department of Homeless Services commented by saying , "We will carefully consider the issues raised in the audit and other reviews of the department's operations so that we can continue to improve shelter conditions and safety and help more individuals exit shelter as quickly as possible."
Department of Homeless Services says it cleared more than 12,000 building violations last December.
