A new state of hunger report shows that the city has a dire need for food donations approaching this holiday season.
According to the Food Bank for New York City, 80 percent of food pantries and soup kitchens across the boroughs saw an increase in demand over the past year. It also found that 60 percent of them even reported running out of food to make adequate meals in September.
A spokesperson for the Food Bank for NYC blames cuts to the food stamp program for the rising need. The cuts took away about $18 per month in benefits from roughly 1 million households.
People are being encouraged to donate or volunteer their time over the next few weeks. There will be several opportunity citywide, including five in Brooklyn.
