The number of unlawful marijuana arrests in The Bronx may be higher than originally thought, according to a new report.
Nonprofit group the Bronx Defenders says that more than 40 percent of 500 clients they interviewed were illegally arrested for marijuana possession. The lawyers say that under New York State law, being in possession of a small amount of marijuana is not a crime as long as you're not in public.
The organization also said that during the majority of the unlawful arrests, the individuals did not voluntarily surrender the pot.
