The unofficial end of summer may have already arrived, but residents in Starrett City are still feeling the heat.
About 15,000 residents at Spring Creek Towers had their central air conditioning shut off earlier this week. Fans, along with cooling stations set up at the Brooklyn Sports Club, were supposed to be provided after the air conditioning was turned off.
Residents say that they knew the switch was coming, but it usually happens later on in the month, when it tends to be cooler. The pipes that pump cold air into apartments also funnel in hot air during the colder months.
Management says the early switch came about because of necessary repairs needed at their power plant. Devorah Fonk, who is with Spring Creek Towers, says they also had to turn off the air conditioning because of deadlines.
She says the shutdown had to be completed by Sept. 1 in order to meet the New York City mandate that they are in a position to provide heat by Oct. 1. Residents say that they should have found another way around the mandate or paid late fees.
