Workers started to clean an illegal dumpsite in East Flatbush that residents say has been around for years.
The dumpsite is near Utica Avenue and Farragut Road. Hercules Reid, who recently ran for City Council, has been leading cleanup efforts and said in the past they have reached out to local elected officials to help clean the site.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Sanitation earlier today, and two hours later crews were on site working.
Part of the area affected by the illegal dumping is privately owned by Qualimax Realty LLC and another section of the area is owned by the Long Island Rail Road.
The LIRR told News 12 in a statement that another company uses that segment of track and they are now working with the freight railroad to investigate the issue.
Community advocates along with residents said they'd like to see more work done to keep their neighborhoods clean.
DSNY said that the best way to stop illegal dumping is by having residents continue to report it.
