Residents in Bed-Stuy called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to correct the city budget, which may lead to the closing of several senior centers Thursday.

The Sumner Houses Senior Center is among more than a dozen in the city that could be closed or consolidated as part of a proposed plan by city officials to save money.

City Councilman Robert Cornegy and state Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright are standing with the residents in their fight. Residents say the other nearest senior center for them is the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center, which is 1.5 miles away.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says these centers were found to be underutilized. He says, "There will be a cost effective new approach to providing seniors in public housing with access to senior centers rather than 'senior clubs' that had been provided by NYCHA directly."
