An elevator in an East Bronx apartment building has been down for more than two weeks, and residents say it is an ongoing issue.
News 12 was told that a number of residents who live in the six-story building on 3230 Cruger Ave. are elderly or have disabilities.
Residents said they have had to pay people to help carry their groceries upstairs since the elevator first went out of service on June 1. It was not the first time the elevator went out of order.
A cease use order is stamped to the first-floor elevator at the building.
Residents said the last two weeks have been dreadful as many of them are not physically able to climb the stairs to their apartments.
According to the Department of Buildings, the issues with the elevator date back to 2003. DOB says during an inspection for the most recent complaints, they found the issues to be more than just an operational problem.
As a result, the building's landlord has been issued a violation.
Cruger Management group took over the co-op building just last summer. They say the elevator should be fixed next week. Residents, however, said they are not assured that it will be a long-term solution.
"There's a lot of people who are handicap and disabled. They can't go up and down the stairs. They've been in their house for weeks," said resident Angela Basoi.
"The elderly, the seniors, I mean I can do it but it's still ruthless, it's a form of torture, that's how it's impacting me," said resident Miriam Snyder.
The building manager told News 12 over the phone that a new cab for the elevator will be installed on Tuesday along with other fixes that are needed.
Department of Buildings said it is monitoring the situation and it will take enforcement actions against the landlord if the repairs are not safely made.
