Residents seeing red after DOT greenlights safety plans in Windsor Terrace

The Department of Transportation has decided to implement new safety plans on the intersection of where 10th Avenue, 20th Street, and McDonald Avenue collide --- a spot some neighbors have called “accident central”.
With almost 30 crashes at the notorious intersection since 2020; two of which reported as 'severe' just this year alone, the DOT intends to incorporate a connected bike lane stretching from 20th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, down to South Slope. The DOT says this is intended to prevent speeding in the area and make it safer for both bicyclists and pedestrians.
Neighbors like Juan Fernando agree with the plan. “I’ve seen a lot of accidents here," said Fernando. "The cyclists are [often] cornered by the running vehicles."
Others like bicyclist, Debbie Deane, say they can't fathom what difference the plans will make. "Why do we need to change this little strip here?" Questioned Deana. "I'm biking here and then I'm gonna to go to that bike lane - its cool!"
The proposal has received mounting pushback from many residents, one of which who created a petition against it calling it dangerous with the potential to cause congestion and crashes. That petition is now halfway to its signature goal in just five days alone.
News 12 reached out to the DOT regrading their response to the communities growing concerns; they stated that the plan is designed to stop speeding and create a safe space for cyclists. They are also looking forward to feedback from residents at their upcoming committee meeting on Wednesday, September 3rd.
