The cost of a gallon of diesel in the U.S. has hit an all-time high this week, and the ripple effects of fuel costs are making services more expensive for Connecticut homeowners.

Residential Waste Systems serves clients in Trumbull, Easton and Monroe, along with a municipal contract up in Bethany. Head of operations J.R. Bria says diesel prices don't just affect what he's putting in his gas tanks.

"Tires, petroleum-based. The oil we use for hydraulic oil, the after treatment for the trucks. Everything we do goes up with the cost of diesel," said Bria.

RWS clients are seeing their rates hiked by a few percent this month. Bria says it's the first time he's had to raise prices in five years.

"Same bills that everybody else has at home, we try to keep our prices fixed as long as we can and keep it affordable, we try to keep it one of the lowest bills in your home, to be honest," said Bria.

Haulers say they have to cushion themselves from the next few months of uncertainty.

Diesel and regular gas prices are continuing to climb despite the state gas tax holiday.

Bria also oversees home heating oil delivery for Residential Fuel Services. He says until fuel prices come down, prices on everything will keep climbing.
