In Hawthorne, a side street off Wagaraw Road crumbled into pieces after floodwaters ravaged the area.
“Literally an hour ago, it was rushing through there like the Passaic River," said Tim Fierro, of North Haledon. "And now, to see everything torn up here, it looks like an earthquake or a bomb went off in there.”
This was the second straight day the area was ravaged by storms. Just south in Paterson, Mayor Andre Sayegh says emergency crews made 20 rescues Tuesday.
“We had several cars submerged in water," Sayegh said. "We had to tow them. There’s actually still one car that needs to be towed. Someone abandoned that vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries.”
Some neighborhoods in Orange say flooding that reaches above car tires has become common.
“All the storms, we have the same issue," said Thomas Serrano, of Orange. "We complain to the city and they just pass the problem around like a hot potato.”
“We are down in the valley," said Orange Councilmember Clifford Ross. "All the water runs down here, and when it rains very hard very quickly, the valley floods.”
It was another strong storm in what has become a serious summer season for damage all over the Garden State, with more on the way this week.
