Safety measures for J'Ouvert Celebrations announced to the public

Top police officials held a news conference this afternoon to announce safety measures ahead of this year's J'Ouvert celebrations.
The event is less than a week away, and this year's safety precautions will closly mirror those that were successfully implemented last year.
This is a city-permitted event that will follow a designated route running from Grand Army Plaza to Nostrand Avenue and Midwood Street.
Thousands of officers are expected to patrol and those taking part in the festivities will need to enter through one of 13 checkpoints.
Backpacks and large bags will not be permitted.
The NYPD will also be installing temporary cameras and more than 300 light towers to enhance surveillance.
The celebration will start just around 6 a.m. Monday and will run until 11 a.m. before the West Indian Day Parade kicks off at noon.
