Satmar Hassidim leader Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum dies at 91

(04/24/06) WILLIAMSBURG ? Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, leader of Satmar Hassidim, died Monday at the age of 91. Teitelbaum has been the rebbe, or grand rabbi, of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect since 1980.

(04/24/06) WILLIAMSBURG ? Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, leader of Satmar Hassidim, died Monday at the age of 91.
Teitelbaum has been the rebbe, or grand rabbi, of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect since 1980. The sect has about 120,000 followers worldwide. The rabbi died at Mt. Sinai hospital where he was receiving treatment for spinal cancer and other ailments.
The rabbi will be buried in the town of Kiryas Joel. Teitelbaum, who was born in Romania, fled to the United States in 1946 to escape Nazi persecution. Teitelbaum is survived by four sons, two daughters and dozens of grandchildren. Two of the rabbi?s sons, Aaron and Zalmen Teitelbaum, have been feuding over who should succeed their father as leader of the sect.
