Students and administrators at I.S. 392 are getting some national recognition for academic diligence.
I.S. 392 is being nominated with 59 other Title I schools for an award for improving education in a high-poverty area. According to the school's principal, it is the only educational facility in New York City nominated and one of two from the state on the list.
The school was created six years ago for gifted students in the borough. School officials say I.S. 392 was a success even before receiving the award.
"We all forged ahead and worked collaboratively to make sure this school came to be," says former Brownsville Superintendent Kathleen Cashin.
