Residents at the John Adams Houses in Melrose had demanded action after the recurring elevator outages left tenants stranded.
The tenants said that after they submitted a slew of NYCHA complaint numbers, the Housing Authority reportedly sent maintenance workers to fix the problem.
However, residents said the issue persisted.
The 21-floor building houses dozens of tenants, including seniors and people with disabilities. Residents say many of them were unable to walk up and down so many flights of stairs, leaving them either stranded in their apartments or in the lobby.
“This is sad. We're not animals, we're human beings. Come and fix this elevator correctly," said longtime tenant Ana Vasquez Roman.
NYCHA initially submitted a statement saying, in part, “One of two elevators servicing this building is offline while undergoing modernization which will improve long-term service... NYCHA staff members are available to assist residents in need with stair-climbers.“
All elevator service has since been successfully restored.
