Residents at the Services for the Underserved and their guests enjoyed a farm-to-table feast in Brownsville Friday, featuring produce from their very own garden.
The group had been growing their own vegetables for months and finally had the opportunity to taste their success.
The feast was part of their Urban Farms Initiative. The program is open to all served by SUS who are interested in agriculture - many of them formerly homeless veterans and people with histories of mental illness or developmental disabilities.
There are 17 sites across New York City, most of them are located in Brooklyn. Organizers say they hope to eventually sell what they have grown to farmers markets and restaurants with proceeds going toward the Urban Farms Initiative.
