A restaurant manager in Canarsie says a foul odor affecting his business is coming from broken pipes along Rockaway Parkway.
Joseph Lopez, who manages Armando's Kitchen, says the city has failed to complete road repairs in front of his business. He says the pipes underneath the road are broken and don't hold water when it rains.
Lopez and tenants who live next door say they have been dealing with the smell of the sewer for more than three months due to the issue. They also say the sewage floods into their basement every time it rains.
"I can't invite anyone to come home by me," he says. "From the time you open the door you can smell the stench."
In a statement, the Department of Environmental Protection says "Earlier this year DEP had cleared a grease clog from the sewer in this area and a crew is being dispatched today to investigate and ensure the sewer is draining properly."
