The biggest grocery store in all of the five boroughs, according to the city's Economic Development Corporation, is a ShopRite that officially opened Monday in the Gateway shopping center in East New York.
The 90,000-square-foot store has created more than 350 full- and part-time jobs and is providing much-needed access to fresh food in an area where it has been lacking for some time.
"They have more selections," one customer said as she walked through the new grocery store.
The ShopRite is the ninth store to open through a city program that aims to increase access to fresh groceries, and it is the first Brooklyn store to open as part of the program.
"It's like a suburban store," said shopper Deborah Jackson, of Bedford-Stuyvesant. "It doesn't look like you're in Brooklyn."
ShopRite is the latest retailer, joining others such as J.C. Penney, Burlington Coat Factory and Petco, to open during the second phase of development at the Gateway Center.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and other leaders were on hand to cut a ribbon at the store opening.
