Residents in Kensington were abruptly woken up early Thursday morning after smoke started rising from a manhole along Dahill Road.
It happened just after midnight. Video from the scene shows smoke pouring from beneath a parked car. One neighbor told News 12 they started seeing the smoke and then noticed firefighters going door to door checking basements on the block.
Con Edison says two smoking manholes released carbon monoxide into a nearby building, forcing firefighters to evacuate residents. No injuries were reported.
Neighbors say the lights started flickering before the power went out.
Con Edison says around a dozen customers lost power. Caution tape lined several homes on the street where the lights were out, and utility crews were on scene for hours.
The cause of the smoke is still under investigation.
