After Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation Tuesday putting an indefinite hold on a bill that would have imposed a 5-cent fee on plastic bags in New York City, some grocers charged a fee anyway on Wednesday -- the day the law was originally set to take effect.

A viewer sent News 12 Brooklyn a photo of a receipt from Blue Ribbon Fruit Store on Avenue J showing the added charge.

The store's manager says he received a notice from the Department of Sanitation saying that beginning Feb. 15, all stores covered under the Carryout Bag Law must charge their patrons at least 5 cents per bag used.

DSNY officials say the mailer was sent to stores last week expecting the law to go into effect Wednesday. Posts were made on the department's website and social media accounts that enacting the fee was suspended.

While some stores knew of the decision, some still charged the fee for hours.

Shoppers say they think plastic bags are detrimental to the environment, but they'd like to see a better solution found that's not a fee.

For now, the governor is promising to form a statewide task force to develop a uniform state plan for addressing the bag issue.
