The transit strike is over but union members continue to fight about the proposed contract. Transport Workers Union Local 100 President Roger Toussaint is urging his members to ratify the offer. Some union members, however, are pushing a "no" vote saying the contract is unfair and illegal. The members claim Toussaint actually misled the executive board into ending the strike, forcing members to pay more for health care and not disclosing so-called "secret deals" on pensions with the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Governor Pataki (R-NY) isn't too happy with the agreement either, suggesting it rewarded the TWU members for striking. The contract was approved last week by the union's executive board 37-4 with one abstention, and must still be ratified by union members.
