Son arrested in axe attack on mom in Coney Island
An arrest has been made in connection to the woman hit in the head with an axe in Coney Island.
Police say the woman is currently in critical condition and that her son has been charged with attempted murder.
The incident happened in the woman’s 5th floor apartment inside 29-50 West 33rd St. around 3 p.m. Monday.
Police say the victim, a 53-year-old woman, was found bleeding heavily from her head. A short time after she was found, police say her 32-year-old son, Daniel Jusufov, walked into Police Service Area 1 a few blocks away and turned himself in.
He was interviewed by detectives for several hours before being charged around 9 p.m. Monday with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Community leaders say they are shocked by the news
"It's a bit of a surprise when we see something like this happen because were not accustomed to it. That's even more disgusting that a mother would be attacked with an axe by her child," says Orlando Mendez, of Community Board 13.
Investigators say they recovered an axe from the scene.
Police tell News 12 the victim remains in critical condition this morning.
