Around 400 volunteers from all over the city gathered at the St. John's Bread and Life soup kitchen in Bed-Stuy for the center's 14th annual Sponsor-a-Family event.
At the soup kitchen, volunteers prepared 2,000 packages of food for families and organized over 5,000 toy donations for underpriveleged children.
The packages and gifts will be distributed to over 1,000 families next weekend.
Volunteers say braving the cold weather this morning was worth it since it means making the holiday season special for those in need.
In addition to the Sponsor-a-Family event, St. John's provides over 2,000 hot meals daily to the less fortunate.
