A special education student was struck by a car while crossing a highway on the border of Westchester County and the Bronx Tuesday.

A state police trooper said the boy was walking on the center median on I-95 around 5 p.m. When a highway patrol vehicle attempted to assist him, he ran across three lanes of traffic into the woods. Police said the 11-year-old boy then tried to return to the median, at which point he was struck by a car.

The driver said he was traveling about 55 mph and claims the boy came out of nowhere.

Family members said he was a special education student. Police found documents in the boy's backpack from the Michaelangelo School in the Bronx and have released his last name, Griffith.

The boy is being treated at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. His condition has been upgraded to stable. Police said he is expected to be OK.
