The city Board of Elections is holding a special election recount in Sunset Park tonight, as they tally the votes cast in the March 20 election for the 27th District state Senate seat. Democrat Lew Fidler and Republican David Storobin are trying to fill the seat vacated after Carl Kruger was convicted of bribery charges last year.

After the election, Storobin was ahead of Fidler by the razor-thin margin of 27 votes. A manual recount is required by law when the vote difference is less than one-half of 1 percent of all votes cast.

Officials from the Board of Elections say that accuracy is of the utmost importance for this recount, which is the first of its kind since the electronic ballot was introduced. Regardless of the timeline, more than 22,000 paper ballots will be counted by hand.

The victor's reign will be short-lived. Redistricting will phase out the district by the end of the year.
