After breaking ground just a few years ago, the doors are now open to The Hartby – a new, 205-unit apartment building.
The building is a transformation from the 19th century old St. John's University building located at 788 Willoughby Ave.
"It was originally set up as a school so you'd walk through the classrooms,” said Matt Linde, CEO of People Restoring Communities, a co-developer on the project.
Even in the rough conditions — Linde said the high ceilings, arched windows and lighting, lent itself to a great residential conversion.
Each of the 205 apartments has its own unique feel. Features of the preexisting Catholic university remain in the design.
“Most of the studios in the building are in the $3,100 to $3,300 range,” said Linde. “The one bedrooms are a little higher than that in the $3,400 to $3,600 a month range."
Sixty-two of the apartments are considered affordable – and only available through Housing Connect.
All tenants are welcome to the fitness center, business centers, lounges, parking, courtyard, and even a dog shower room.
"Here on the roof deck we're going to have a dog run,” said Linde. “A pergola, a sundeck, a barbecue, grilling stations and a fire pit with an outdoor tv coming by the end of September."
With 70% of the building now occupied, there’s still a few more units up for grabs.
