The Brooklyn district attorney and the NYPD teamed up with a local church for a gun buyback event in East New York.
Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez and community members worked together in hopes of reducing the recent spike in gun violence throughout the five boroughs.
Anyone who wanted could come to St. Paul Community Baptist Church and return their gun anonymously.
The guns will then be melted down and destroyed.
Organizers of the event want to remind people that the church serves as a safe space to return the firearms. No identification was taken and no one was arrested.
Anyone turning in a gun, whether legal or illegal, received $200 bank cards for every gun or assault rifle that was turned in. Residents are allowed to receive up to $600.
Gonzalez says he hopes this will be a way to get guns off the street to make New York City a safer place.
