Fans of the hit show Power are turning time back and getting a look at the origin of one of its most popular characters originally played by 50 Cent. Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres Sunday, and News 12 sat down with the show's actors on what to expect from the newest season.
Power is back with an explosive new take on the origin story of one of the of the most ruthless characters on TV.
"The power brand is family drama, plus crime, plus cops and robbers, plus romance - we do kind of all of it," says creator of Power Courtney Kemp.
Kemp says the prequel started with her and 50 Cent asking, "What does it mean to be a 15-year-old-boy?"
Actor Mekai Curtis, playing teen Kanan, practiced 50s mannerisms and even his dialect. The character's mother says the show starts with family.
"She is strong, she's a boss, she's ruthless, she's cold, but when it comes to her family, she is loving at the end of the day. She's just a mom who loves her son more than anything," says actress Patina Miller.
"Inside of it becoming a coming-of-age drama, it is a family drama as well. It's about a son's love for his mother and a mother's love for her son," says Curtis.
This season introduces a new cast including heavyweights Joey badda$$ and Omar Epps.
"You literally don't have to see a single episode of any of the other shows to watch this one. It's a whole completely new cast. It might actually be interesting to watch this one first because it is a prequel to the story, so you know the backstory if you watch this show," Joey Bada$$ explained.
Epp's character is a police officer and makes an appearance right away coming face to face with Kanan and his mother with knowledge of what's been going on in the streets.
"Without revealing too much they definitely know one another. He's the cop that's always around the way messing up a lot go things and for Raquel and for where she is in her business - this is the last thing she needs is this guy around," Miller said.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres July 18 on Starz.
