There could be bad news for four hospitals in Brooklyn.According to the New York Post, Long Island College Hospital, Victory Memorial Hospital, New York Community Hospital and Interfaith Hospital are vulnerable when a state commission meets to consider the fate of 12 hospitals in the city. The hospitals are in every borough except Staten Island. The commission was created by Governor Pataki (R-NY) to identify unnecessary facilities that are driving up health care costs in New York. Its recommendations must be sent to Pataki by December 1, and then to the state legislature, which can accept or reject the findings. Local leaders and community members are voicing their opposition, with some Brooklyn residents saying the hospitals should stay open whether they make money or not. Last week, the City Council also unveiled its own plan, asking the commission to evaluate the impact of hospital closures on a borough-by-borough basis instead of viewing the city together as a whole.
