A state program is expanding its services to provide more relief for renters who have been financially impacted by the pandemic.
The COVID Rent Relief Extension Program is easing its requirements so more people can be eligible for rent assistance.
According to Councilman Fernando Cabrera, those eligible need to be New York residents who are spending 30% of their income toward rent. They must also show that there was a hardship during April 1 through July 31.
Struggling households can apply for up to four months in rental assistance under the Homes and Community Renewal State Program, a rent relief initiative that was started in response to the financial hardship due to COVID-19.
Councilman Cabrera says the help is desperately needed, especially in his northwest district where the majority of Bronx residents live in apartments.
“This is going to be an opportunity for thousands of New Yorkers to take advantage of this rent relief that is need,” he says.
Applications for the relief program are being accepted until Feb. 1.
