A new state law went into effect Tuesday that allows for drivers with unpaid fines to keep their licenses.

The law says licenses will no longer be suspended, even if drivers have forgotten or cannot afford to pay the fines.

However, a traffic court attorney says it's still important to respond and not ignore them.

"People who actually go to court or have lawyers who go to court for failure to pay their fines because they're unable to pay their fines, they now have the ability to enter into payment plans. Let's say they miss their payment plans. There are a number of notices that must be sent out," said Wendy Bishop, of The Bishop Firm.

Bishop points out if a driver fails to respond to the fines at all, their license can still be suspended.
