Dozens of Polish Americans and community members gathered in Greenpoint to witness the unveiling of a statue dedicated to American war hero Gen. Thaddeus Kosciuszko.
The monument, which is open to the public, depicts the influential figure who fought during the American Revolution.
"He fought for justice, for liberty...he was a great, great general in the military and started West Point. I am super proud," said Artur Dybanowski, President of Pulaski Association of Business and Professional Men.
Proud New Yorkers of Polish descent, including the Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, remembered Kosciuszko for his brave leadership.
"This is the man who started at all. He gets no recognition or attention; I am going to make sure the rest of my life we focus on Kosciuszko and Pulaski because their legacy needs to be taught," said Sliwa.
The statue can now call the park under the Kosciuszko Bridge home.
